It was a prosperous post-war era of sock hops, rock n' roll music and hot rods. Signs were neon and the lettering was flashy and fun. Scripts were popular for magazines and TV, while plain sans serif styles were being hand painted on truck doors. E.C. Matthews was a prolific "snapper" (a sign painter that specializes in quick, functional work) who published many books during this period, showcasing his styles and offering advice. Cecil Wade was a UK-based signwriter who also published lettering books and served as mentor to Arthur Vanson. I'm grateful that Arthur was able to preserve the styles he learned from Cecil, so that we may use them in our work today. |
